How an Australian Coal Mine enhances compliance with an access control solution for keys
Meandu Mine is a coal mine in Queensland, Australia. It is owned by Stanwell Corporation and operated by Downer Mining. The mine has five active working pits.

Challenge: Legacy key management system led to poor accountability and compliance risks
The on-site team faced challenges with a legacy key management system. Despite using competitor key cabinets, staff used paper-based registers to monitor and track key transactions. The old key cabinets had generic pin codes that allowed unrestricted key access to all staff.
As a result, keys were often taken offsite, sometimes ending up in the pockets of staff members who unknowingly took them home. This inefficient key management system resulted in unrestricted access to explosives and raised other compliance and risk concerns. Maintaining compliance with Standard Mining License 2187 (to regulate the storage, transport, and use of explosives) was at risk. The situation presented unacceptable risks to reputational damage, physical theft, and safety.

Management soon realized they needed a key management system to take control of keys. So, they turned to Torus and 1 Torus-15 cabinet has been installed till date. With Torus they now have a single platform to monitor and control access to keys in real-time. Only authorized staff can access keys and if keys are not returned, Torus software sends real-time alerts ensuring accountability and prompt return of the keys. Now that their keys are in control, Meandu mine is saving enormous time every year.
